Correspondence with Alma Mahler, 1931-1955.

In correspondence until 1938 Hollnsteiner often reports on political circumstances in Austria; included is a draft version of an essay by Hollnsteiner on the Austrian Concordat of 1933 (a document bearing on the relations between the Austrian state and the Catholic Church), and he sometimes mentions his work on other writings. 1 letter from Hollnsteiner to Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg in 1935 registers an objection about the removal of the bust of Gustav Mahler in the Vienna State Opera from its previous position of honor; and in 1 subsequent letter to Alma Mahler Hollnsteiner reports the decision on the part of the mayor of Vienna, Richard Schmitz, to reject the design proposed by the sculptor Fritz Wotruba for the monument. 2 items pertain to the death of Manon Gropius, in April 1935: Hollnsteiner's handwritten copy of the address he delivered at the graveside; and a photocopy of the letter which Hollnsteiner wrote to Walter Gropius, on behalf of Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, reporting on the circumstances of Manon's death. Also included is a carbon copy of a letter of 1936 which Hollnsteiner wrote to an unidentified university professor, requesting that the latter support the nomination of Franz Werfel for the Nobel Prize for Literature. After a gap in correspondence between 1939 and 1945, a letter from Jacob Levine (apparently a U.S. soldier stationed near Abbey St. Florian, Austria) addressed to Franz Werfel, on Hollnsteiner's behalf, expresses Hollnsteiner's desire to reestablish contact. The subsequent correspondence includes a draft response by Alma Mahler to Levine; and 3 letters from Hollnsteiner in the period between 1945 and 1955. Included is a clipping about Hollnsteiner lecturing on St. Florian and Bruckner, from a German newspaper during Nazi period (1942).
